Before I moved to Arizona, I owned a townhouse in Minnesota about half the size of the lake home that I sold. In a previous post, The Challenge of Small Spaces, you will see that downsizing was a huge challenge for me.

But perseverance and determination are two of my best character traits and I put both of them to the test during that move!

Desk with Bookcases

One room, just off my dining area, was a small sitting room or study.  I often had my computer on the little desk that’s there (although I confess to doing most of my work at my dining table).

I wanted to have bookshelves in that space but it’s small, of course, and I didn’t want to make it appear any smaller than it is.

Another dilemma is that I’m partial to dark woods.  Their warmth appeals to me. But putting large dark bookcases in a small space was counterproductive.

One day while I was shopping in my local Target store, I found just what I was looking for. Two of these Threshold Carson Bookcases. They were just the right size. Not too deep, either, so they don’t jut out into the room. I  liked the Espresso finish.

I couldn’t buy them at the actual Target store because I had no way to get them home. So I ordered them from Target online and got free shipping and they were delivered to my home within a few days.

My Review

Each bookcase was packed with the instructions right on top.  Everything was bubble wrapped and the box was lined with foam.

The Pros

  • It’s easy to assemble if you follow the directions…took about an hour (per bookcase)
  • It’s sturdy
  • It has a rich, high-quality appearance.
  • It blends beautifully with my antiques as well as my more contemporary pieces.
  • It’s a very good value
  • I would definitely recommend this.

The Cons

A few reviewers complained that the boxes were damaged and one or two didn’t think the quality is as good as they expected.  It’s not meant to be a high-end piece so expectations should have reflected that.

My opinion is that for the price, it’s a great value.

Please let me know if you purchase this bookcase and your thoughts on its quality and value.  My purpose is to present furniture solutions for small spaces and this qualifies as an excellent choice.

I love to shop at Target.

Home accents in every trendy color.

Thanks for stopping by and stay tuned!

Cheryl… I’m SO happy I came across this review. My daughter, who is in college, needs extra space in her dorm room for all of her books. We’re planning on driving down to visit her in a few weeks and this sounds like the perfect solution. Plus, because it needs assembly, we’ll be able to fit it in the car.
Thanks for writing a great review, it just got Target a sale.

Thanks, Bob. The way people are living, these days, indicates that downsizing to smaller homes is on the upswing. That’s a good thing, in my humble opinion!

    Hi Cheryl,

I like your site very much and it is just what I am looking for. It is very clean looking, and full of great information. You have presented things and awesome ideas for a home that I think people are looking for…Myself especially, thanks!

I Totally agree with you about small spaces. The bookcase is the perfect size for a small space. Very good buy as well. I have a few of those kind of places where I need a little something and not wanting to spend allot.

I am sure it will work in your space very well. It is not so much of where you purchased the shelf, as long as it works with the persons budget and for what they need in the space.

I really liked your blog, Thank you.

    • Cheryl Kohan says:

    Hi Cheryl,
Our daughter is looking for bookshelves to put in her nursery for now. These look like they just might be what she is looking for. I thank you for this information. It is very complete and tells a person everything that is important. Again, thank you.

Hi I to have downsized and finding furniture that does not look like it is taking over the room can be a challenge I do like the look of the bookcase you have in the picture as it seems quite slim and not too bulky, I think having darker furniture is fine so long as you have light rooms other wise it can look too over powering, quite a reasonable price to

    • Cheryl Kohan says:

I agree about using dark furniture…it can be overpowering. In my small sitting room, it works because there is a very large window and hardwood floors with a light area rug. The bookcases are on either side of a small dark walnut writing desk. Thank you for visiting, Katie.

Hello, my friend this case for his books. He likes and told me that I could use this type of book case too. I will visit him and will decide, looks sturdy and elegant together.

You write that, “it’s easy to assemble if you follow the directions…took about an hour (per bookcase).” That seems somewhat long for assembly. Are the instructions easy to follow?

Thanks for the review as it looks as if it would fit a need that I have.

    • Cheryl Kohan says:

      Hi Vince,

Yes, the instructions are quite easy to follow. It probably didn’t take a full hour per bookcase but I’m probably slower than most people! I should probably revise that estimate.

Thank you so much for the feedback!
