More and more people are starting businesses and side-hustles or opting to work from home (at least part of the time).

When you live and work in a small space it’s important to be able to concentrate on the tasks at hand without sacrificing comfort.

That means you’ll want a workspace that’s big enough for all the tools you need to accomplish your daily goals, small enough to fit in a small room or corner, and comfortable enough to ensure that you’ll work without feeling cramped.

That’s a tall order!

Wall-mounted desks are brilliant space-saving options.

Okay, I’ll confess…I live in a small house and my desk is in my laundry room. I guess it’s supposed to be the counter where you fold clothes when you take them from the dryer but it’s my desk! It is wall-mounted so I’m counting it as a space-saving desk choice for this post!

I’m on the road for another couple of weeks but I’ll post a picture of it when I get home.

My 4 Best Space Saving Choices

#1 – By Kovot

This clever rustic wall desk is on my list because it would be ideal for a dorm room or a studio apartment where floor space is especially minimal.  It could function as a small table, as well.

There are three shelves for books or office supplies. Just pull up a chair when you’re ready to work and you’re all set!

This desk is constructed of solid wood with metal supports so it’s sturdy.

It has three shelves for organizing books and other supplies. When the desk is folded up, there’s a handy chalkboard.

It’s rated 4 stars by verified purchasers on Amazon. If you’re an Amazon Prime member there’s no shipping charge – Bonus!

#2 – By SEI Southern Enterprises

The Willingham is an attractive desk with a fold-down desktop. It’s just the right size for a laptop.

Its features include four compartments, an angled paper organizer, a corkboard, one drawer, and a clean-looking white laminate finish. It’s also available with a mahogany veneer for a sophisticated look.

The Willingham is rated 4.5 out of 5 stars and there are 85 positive reviews on Amazon! You can mount it at whatever height works for you.

One satisfied buyer mounted it at a standing height but is looking for a stool to use with it, as well. I think that’s a brilliant idea!

#3 Prepac Floating Desk

This might just be my favorite of all. It’s a laptop desk with a pull-out keyboard drawer. I don’t have a separate keyboard but I do use a mouse and mousepad and that drawer would work great for that.

I love that the side compartment has two adjustable shelves. You can position them at the spacing that works best for your books and other supplies.

Hidden wire management is integrated into the design of the desk, keeping cables and wires out of sight and out of mind. (From Product Description on Amazon)

This white laminate is nice but it’s also is available in an espresso finish.

It has a 4.3 out of 5-star rating.

Thinking Outside the Box!

One reviewer said she mounted a mirror where the computer would go and she’s using it as a makeup station…thinking out the box!

#4  Southern Enterprises Corner Desk

This transitional style desk in an espresso finish is a great option if your only available space is a corner.

Although it’s just 11″ tall, it has a generous workspace and features 1 drawer, 3 fixed shelves and includes 1 cord management opening.

From the Amazon Product Description:

Corner your small space home office concerns once and for all, with this wall mount desk. Convenient corner-hugging silhouette and small profile fit into the snuggest of spaces, while rich espresso hue goes anywhere.

Three shelves and a drawer tidy up loose papers, accessories, and small electronics; broad laptop desk or workspace make task time a breeze. Work smart, not hard with this transitional wall mount floating desk in any, or every, room in your home.

This must be a fairly new Amazon product because there are no reviews, yet. If you decide this is the right choice for you, I hope you do leave a review. Reviews are so helpful when ordering online.

Well, there you have it…four excellent choices if you need a desk for a small space.

Location, location, location…

Awkward-nook-transformed-into-stylish-work-space

Whether you are self-employed, frequently work from home, or are a student, finding a place to work in a small space can be tricky.

  • It needs to be easily accessible, able to contain your work or study necessities and relatively private, depending on the situation.
  • You’d also need access to an electrical outlet in order to plug in a task light and cords for computer and printer, etc.

The little office in this picture is about as simple as it gets if you happen to have a staircase niche where you are able to tuck a small desk and chair.

This would also be do-able in a small closet.  You could remove the doors…or not. Shelves above the desk could store supplies. Again, keep in mind that you’ll need access to electricity.

The photo below illustrates how to create a study or office space where there is no closet or under-the-stair niche.

This appears to be on a bedroom or dressing room wall as evidenced by the jewelry and a mirror hanging above the desk and illustrates that an area such as this can serve double duty.  I think it would be particularly good for a student’s study spot.

Wherever you choose to create your small space office, it’s important to keep clutter at bay.  Being organized will make working from your home office so much more pleasant and you’ll be so much more productive.

Be sure to make it a pleasing area with wall art and a plant or two.

If you have the room, put in a comfortable chair. If your work chair is a comfortable chair, all the better! I call my comfy chair my “thinking” chair.  It’s where I go to brainstorm ideas. I can have a cup of tea and just let the creativity flow naturally.  It works!

Placing a plant on your desk or in your office space brings life into the space.  Plus plants are known for increasing air quality.

Ideally, your desk will face the door but if it doesn’t and you have no alternative, hang a mirror over the desk.  That will serve two purposes: it will spread any natural light that you have and it will satisfy a feng shui principle for creating positive energy.

When you’re looking for desks, don’t just concentrate on traditional desks.  The ideas here in this post illustrate that you can use a shelf or a small table with a stool or a chair and you’ve got that office niche.  I do like a desk that’s a multipurpose piece.

This Winsome Wood Rochester Console Table with one Drawer Shaker is a great example.

What’s great about it is that it’s truly multipurpose:

  • Place it flat against a wall to use as a desk.
  • Place one short end against the wall and it’s a perfect small dining table, too, with a chair on either side.
  • Try using it as a sofa table if the sofa is placed in the middle of the room.

So there you go…some simple but effective ways to create an office or study space in a small room.

I’ve posted my choices for wall-mounted desks on my post Best Wall-Mounted Desks so stop there, too.  You might just find the perfect desk.

Please let me know in the comments below how you’ve solved this dilemma.  I’d love to see a picture of your small office.

Thank you for stopping by and stay tuned!
